Audubon Zoo
Be Enchanted to Find a Unique Wildlife Haven Full of New Orleans Flavor at Audubon Zoo
Audubon Zoo is Big Easy’s living museum as well as a historical site packed with a few of the rarest and most lovely creatures of nature. Animals have been in this area since the 1884 World Exposition in Audubon Park. Presently, Audubon Zoo is 58 acres of animals in their all-natural habitats.
The Zoo continually rates amongst this country’s best. Site visitors are enchanted to locate a special wildlife haven filled with New Orleans flavor, excellent 100-year old oak trees, and a cast of animal characters. Animal faves consist of elephants Jean and Panya, the Komodo dragon, and an uncommon white tiger from California called King Zulu. Yet also try to find bears, monkeys, snakes, orangutans, elks, as well as even more unique animals than you can think of!
Plentiful of the zoo was around from the early 20th century. The sea lion pool was established in 1928. Its elegant columns note among Audubon Zoo’s most charming places. Monkey Hill was constructed by Works Progress Administration workers to show the youngsters of New Orleans what a hill looks like! At 28 feet, it’s the iconic “highest topographical point in New Orleans.” Today it boasts wading pools, a rope bridge, and a safari trail.
At the Audubon Zoo, visitors can stroll via an actual swamp right in the middle of rich New Orleans. A Cajun houseboat on shallows filled with 14-foot alligators encounters a set of lively black bears. A raccoon resists the laws of physics by snoozing on a slim branch on top of a tree. At the baby animal nursery, naturalists show visitors baby nutria, discussing why that innocent-looking fuzzy creature is endangering the very existence of the swamps.
Additionally, the world-renowned white alligators float in a display created particularly for them. Rocking chairs throughout the swamp exhibit welcome visitors to slow down as well as take in the atmosphere of the swamp. An air-conditioned dining establishment supplies a welcome venue for a sit-down snack and drink.
